The Word Graffiti?

Did you know Graffiti is originated from a Italian
Word.

It means scratched

It is applied in art history as works of art produced by scratching a design into the surface.

Hmm, I wonder how art using a can of spray paint evolved from that? Is that American Graffiti, hahaha, get it?

There is a whole other movement that started in the streets of Mexico that utilizes spray paint it's called aerosolgrafia it started around 1982 by a guy named Ruben Sadot it was street art and part performance art this artist died tragically at a young age and another group of artist most notably of the group is Gerardo Amor and others took this art movement to new heights.

I have numerous examples of this art in my gallery as I went thru a phase that I was really fascinated with the technique and it uses more than just a spray can, you need lots of newspaper. What can be created is really amazing!

Indeed, interesting. Yes, the term is credited to Italians in the mid-19th century but doesn't the practice, itself, date back thousands of years to early cave paintings, scratching into rock surfaces?

Please carry on, Carlton.

I love graffiti and didn't know that Carlton. Thank you for that...I can't get that out of my mind.

Whenever a train goes by and I have to stop for awhile, I get excited for the art show. I pull out my phone for ideas. lol

In Brazil we have territorial graffiti ( Pichação) which is put up by rival groups, considered vandalism. Then we have artistic grafitti, best known is probably Kobra, currently there is a major art (gallery) exhibition by grafitti artists. There is some amazing work out there, both spontaneous and commissioned, 10 floor building size.

The pixação / pichação Brazilian graffiti James McCormack mentions is an interesting cultural phenomenon. I've seen the style in a couple of other South American cities too (notably Lima in Peru) and came across this article while trying to find out more about it: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2016/jan/06/pixacao-the-story-behind-sao-paulos-angry-alternative-to-graffiti

My biggest problem is trying to remember whether it's 'graffiti' or 'grafitti' - lol.
