Yesterday, I learned that I received a grant from the local arts council (Kamloops Arts Council). I am very excited as it will be used towards purchasing art supply kits for local children that are part of a charity that I am working with. We are planning to exhibit some of the pieces the children create with these kits in their own group show next year. Waiting to hear back from the two art supply companies I put donation requests into for this project as well; fingers crossed. This will be so much fun; can't wait to see what the kids come up with and to view their show :)
Edit: Here's a link about the show for those interested: BKR Made With Love Project

my granddaughter has an abstract artist as artist in residence at her school this week. he kicked off the week with a slide presentation of 'famous' abstract artists.
one of my paintings was in the group and he announced my name.
so that's not the good news..the good news is that my sweetheart munchkin announced that i was her gramma!

That is so cool Marlene! My good news is that my roommate made coffee this morning Mmmmm

thanks renee and yolanta!
this kid is the one i have waiting for...she is the artist....and far more creative than i ever was! i am thrilled that the artist at her school is an abstract artist.....too often elementary aged kids are pushed to early into drawing and painting 'better' pictures that show 'real' stuff!

Yesterday, in Sterling Heights, I hung two small solo exhibits. Today, I had a good morning doing a short 20 min. interview with local TV and reporters from two local newspapers; I do not know when it will air they will notify me later. The two papers will be printing articles and will send me copies when it is published. Now, I need to get back to the real world and work.
Here is one of the piece in the exhibits.

I am able to attend the Society for Art in Healthcare's annual conference in Detroit. While there today I was informed that a hospital that had been reviewing my artwork has decided to use my work for an entire floor of the hospital and for the cafeteria. They will do it in phases starting with a dozen that will be printed on acrylic the largest to be about 72"x96". Another party asked me to meet with them next week for possibly contracting me to do street photography to go in a new facility as well as selling from their gallery. Also several art directors from other facilities seemed interested in my work. It has bee an exciting day today, there are two more days to the conference.

I got a call today asking me to do a solo exhibit at Wolcott Mills for the month of October. They told me it is their busiest month and would like me to do a waterfall theme. My entry, REFLECTIONS IN COLOR, was selected for inclusion in this year’s Red River Watercolor Society’s 19th Annual Juried National Watermedia Exhibition
by juror Donna Zagotta. It will be on display June 17 – September 16, 2012 at the Hjemkomst Gallery, Moorhead, MN.
This new painting is currently on display in the FrameWorks Gallery exhibit with my 10 Brushes group show in Highland Park, St. Paul in a Path of Light show.
Kind of exciting to have so much action in my life and this painting's life in such a short time span.

So, I got more details on the image use for a book cover, a college text book for economics...and the name of the publishing company.
I have to say, after getting so many spam emails, getting a legitimate offer for commercial image use is so heartening. The first commercial use of my work also happened through FAA, the opportunities this site has given me are worth smiling about.

5-19-12 5:15 pm, I sold my first 3D stereo anaglyph to a purchaser in Junction, WI. It also happened to be an OOB (Out Of Bounds), also known as OOF (Out Of Frame) image. I was thrilled to learn that my Guitar Siren is featured on FAA's home page today!
With over 2.7 million pieces of artwork here I am truly flattered to be featured! Since I unveiled this series last week, three pieces have won top honors in five competitions on FAA and now this home page feature...I don't know what to say...I'm honored. Thank-you, FAA! :)

Nikki... your art is exceptional and quite expressive... well deserved front piece!
JL Meadows... well, to make a long story short about my art with Leanin' Tree...
During the late 70s a friend I had done some art for (his gift products, displays, etc.) was doing a trade show and Leanin' Tree had a booth there also... he showed them my stuff and they first published my work as cards in 1980 and have been doing it ever since.... The choice of making it a page header in their catalog was made by someone in their marketing dept... probably wanted to feature a golf subject I guess (??)
More details on this, etc... http://issuu.com/nateowens/docs/pigments01/1

I'm excited! I have been asked to write a regular column in Cloth Paper Scissors magazine for this year and next year! After being a finalist in their international "On the Street Where You Live" competition a little over year ago with one of my Wee Planets, they asked me to write a tutorial on the technique for their readers early this year. They liked the article and asked me to write three more. Then I was asked to write a tutorial on a book binding project for their sister magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors PAGES (it's in the current issue which just came out). They also are featuring one of my most artistic handmade papercloth books in the gallery section! (I am eagerly awaiting my copy of the magazine...)
This morning I was asked if I would like to continue writing the "Getting Technical" tutorial column for artists for 2013, too! (Happy dance!)

@Sharon - you can't. (FAA protects the buyer's privacy and doesn't release more than their city and state to the artist.) The only thing you can do is leave a nice thank-you comment on the artwork page, i.e. "Thank you to my patron from City, State! I hope you enjoy this piece." etc. I've been told that sometimes a visitor will return to look at the piece they bought while waiting for it to arrive in the mail, and that is your best chance of saying thanks.

Boy, looks like no one has had very good news in over a month!
I recently received two copies of local Phone Directories in the mail and some of my friends in the local area say they are receiving their new Ph Directories for the area that is using one of my images for the cover. The directory is for 2012-2013 and comes out in July.
The image wasn't the best and unfortunately was a zoomed hand-held shot across the cove from my property but I'm not going to argue with them if they want to use it! They gave me credit at the bottom of the first page.

She is still on IV antibiotic therapy through a 24/7 pic line for the next 8 days, but we are so thankful that she survived what could have been a horrible tragedy after a joyous event of giving birth. Sepsis and Strep A bacterial infection developed at the hospital as well a pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure. I am here with her until the 18th of June to help with the baby since Tanya is attached to many tubes, wires, monitors, batteries, IV lines... POOR Thing! BUT MY GOOD/GREAT NEWS is that she is home and on the road to recovery and Lauren is healthy and happy to have her mommy home!!!

OK I got a sale - but that's not the good news - i'm not celebrating yet because last time I "sold" something the buyer cancelled out, so until the money is in my account, i am taking it all in with a grain of salt. The GOOD news is that the sale was a huge (60" on the long side) glossy canvas print, AND there wasn't even a peep about resolution issues. That's what I am celebrating. One wonders - at least I always do - whether the resolution issues that threaten some sales, particularly for large prints, will be a problem with my own work. So now I know that at least SOME of my pieces will stand up to enlargement. I call that excellent news!

I walk for about 8 to ten miles every morning - today - I did not get rained on. - and it's raining now. Saturday, I was about halfway through my walk, the farthest point, and a real severe thunderstorm caught me. Sunday, I was about five city blocks away when it rained. - nope - I carry a long walking stick, not an umbrella, nor do I take a poncho. Never trust the weather channel to know if it's really going to rain on you in Florida. - in this season - it's 50/50 - regardless of what they say.
PS: I'd post a photo - but I seldom carry my camera when there is this much chance of rain - it's not waterproof.

Exciting news everyone,
I have been working on alot of projects while I was gone. Monday, I meet with the wardrobe and the director of a new movie being filmed here in New Orleans, Louisiana an 1830's film. American Horror Story, my role will be playing the piano at a party setting two day filming of the scene. you can read all about it, received phone call from the agents yesterday. I will keep all of you posted and updated. Julia Robert's niece will be leading actress moving to New Orleans, LA. Jessica Lange world famous actress returning for scenes which she will be appearing in. Wish me luck.
Surprised is not the word, I pretty much screamed, I had gotten the email, then replied, then they sent three more and said when a decision was made they would contact me.
Well, they called and as I mentioned above, they saw my bio, and liked what they saw, I meet with the director and the ad department of the movie mini series, and wardrobe and casting director on Monday,
Back in the 80's I was in a mini series, had a part with the leading actress Unfamiliar Places Of Japan took place in the early 1800s and the leading actress journey around the world ended here in New Orleans, I pretty much filmed with the leading actress most of the river front shots with the paddle wheel boats, I was her escort along the levee, to board the boat, and then once on the boat her and I where on the upper deck waving good-bye and I had to take off my straw hat, and motion like I meant it. lol
I love it I was famous and now famous once again. I was not selected as a contestant on America's Got Talent, but I was there, and my good friend
Deborah she made it on air, as they where filming contestants waiting in front of me, there is my friend Deborah between them, and you only see part of my left shoulder. But they may still show other segiments from New Orleans, they did film me doing a second line dance, I have a red jacket on waving a hankie in the air. Thats a second line dance, strut with the music.
I will keep everyone posted. I am meeting with alot of important people tomorrow, the casting director, the film director, ad department, wardrobe. I will let everyone know when it will be seen. That would be fun. But I will keep everyone posted.
Hollywood, Hollywood, da da da da da Hollywood, dat dat dat dat dat da da, hummm hummm hollywood.
And I will also discuss my gallery at Fine Art America for any future use on their movie sets.

My good news is that today the body shop started repairing my truck. On Saturday, 6 July, I was t-boned by another vehicle. Their insurance is paying for not only all of the repairs (to the tune of just under $8900.00), but also the rental car.

Never saw this thread before. Kinda neat.
Good news is the house we thought was going to be a gonner will not be a gonner.
Long story short: storms brought a giant oak tree down on our house and demolished the back porch and caved in the roof of all three rooms in the back of the house. (Not our primary residence). We were uninsured - insurance company canceled the policy because it was not inhabited.
Tree cleanup alone cost $5000. We thought the house would need to be bulldozed, but it appears now it will not. It's fixable, and at a decent price.
Pretty happy about that.

I had two of four photos accepted into the Iowa State Fair this year. Won 2nd place for "Moonglow" and 3rd for "Hats". This is a very competitive venue (exhibited 862 of 3678 entries) and the quality of the show itself is excellent - plus the prizes are good for a state fair ($100 for 1st, $75 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd). This was my first year to enter and I was really disappointed to have only two accepted - until I found out that only four of 1157 entrants had all four entries exhibited LOL
Did very well in the Nebraska State Fair, too - but they allow 16 entries and exhibit everything you send so there are too many to show you.

I was on my regular coffee break walk with two other coworkers today when we found a lost cat. He called out to us as we passed a tree he was under, then came out to us when he was called. He had a collar with i.d. (name - Fred with phone number), but neither of us had a cell phone handy. Long story short, we flagged down a texting student across the parking lot, she turned out to love cats and called the number on the tag and spoke to the owner. Fred is actually a girl, and was a few miles away from home. How she got to where we found her is a mystery, but she is home and happy, safe and sound, now. Yes, there ARE good people in the world, Mo T. I am grateful to the student who helped us. :)

I've been contributing to MPT's (Maryland Public Television) Online site - http://www.capturemaryland.com/users/Starg82343 and recently told some friends, the site included one of my images in their 2014 calendar. After a couple of weeks my friends told me they saw my calendar image at Costco!
Update: I went to Costco today to find the calendar, mainly to see for myself and see what price it's selling for. I found it and it's selling for $7.49. I had already bought mine online from MPT for twice that amount. I picked up another one from Costco while I was there. I figured I could give it as a gift for Christmas. The Calender goes into 2015.

I began a one-woman photography show at a local library here in Tampa (North Tampa Branch). I have 17 pieces on display from 10/1 through 12/31/13. I was allowed to put on the identification cards that they could ask the desk for more information on pieces and pricing, which is awesome. They weren't originally going to let me do it because one of the members thought it would be "advertising" for me. I was allowed to create price sheets that can be handed out to those who ask. Last Tuesday, the Friends of the Library sponsored a reception for me that was open to the public for two hours. They provided all the refreshments and snacks. I prepared a nice 20-minute slide show of my best images I have posted here on FAA, and it ran continuously. People were coming and going through the night, but I was able to talk to a lot of them answering many questions and handing out cards. Time will tell how "productive" it will be as far as sales, but it is good experience for me doing this on my own.
Also had three pieces included in a two-week show at the Hoffman-Porges Gallery in Ybor City the end of September along with several other members from the local art league of which I am a member.
I am loving this face-to-face interaction sharing my photography. It is quite a bit different from the online world, that is for sure!

On the urge of some fellow photographers on one of the threads here in FAA I was convinced to raise my prices which they thought were low. I had good reason for my earlier pieces because of resolution and dimension issues but I went ahead and raised my prices several times since then. I usually average roughly 1 sale a month but had no purchases after the price hike for about 2 months until this past Thursday. A buyer from Orlando FL gave me my largest sale so far on FAA and purchased the largest size available as well. I know there's another thread for sales, but while I was here I thought I would share the good news!

I was chosen to be a Spotlighted Artist in the Fredrix Canvas 2014 Catalogue. It is their 150th year anniversary and they are doing something a little different this year for their catalogue. They are spotlighting artists who use their different types of canvases. The canvas I represent is the Fredrix Red Label Gallery Wrap canvas. The page shows a photo of me at my easel painting, a couple of my paintings and a paragraph written by me on why I like Fredrix canvases. I was completely surprised when I was contacted on my cell phone by the Graphics, Marketing lady from Fredrix canvas. She had already looked at my Facebook Art page (Julie Brugh Riffey Artwork) and picked out paintings she wanted to feature. She sent me my page layout this week to see it now and will send me a copy of the catalogue when it is printed.

We sold 2 prints this Thursday through ABC / Disney licensing program and we are now waiting for their $200 licensing fee check. It is for the show 'The Neighbors' but, according to the agreement, they may not use the art after all. Would be nice to see our prints on the set of their TV show, of course :) Once we get the check, will ask them if and when they will use the prints.

About five weeks ago my computer started shutting off for what appeared to be no reason. Thinking it might be overheating due to the fact that I had not cleaned the dust out in 3 years I took it apart blew out the dust, put it back together and while the fans stopped going into high speed mode due to heat, it still would shut down unexpectedly. Then one morning I turned it on and the surge suppressor it was plugged into caught fire. I figured since it was ten years old it had just given up the ghost and went out and bought a ups with battery back up . Brought it home plugged it in waited 8 hours for the battery to charge, plugged in the computer and all seemed good for a few hours. Them the ups low power alarm went off telling me to shut down before the battery went dead. Humm....
Now I am a little strange, seldom have lights on in my house, except when cooking dinner now that it gets dark early , and I noticed the lights seemed dimmer and would flicker brighter and dimmer on occasion and over a few days it started getting worse. Oh great that I, the electric system in the house was screwed up and I was gonna have a huge repair bill, which the money for, have I did not. I was imagining tearing out walls to find the problem in other words panic. I sat down to think it out, got out my electrical test kit, nothing showed faulty wiring and the circuit breakers never tripped so maybe it was the power companies problem. I call them 2 days later two clowns show up put a volt meter on the system and see nothing wrong and the light and stuff in the house were good so they left. Now this was an intermittent problem and they were not gone ten minutes and the lights were flickering and the ups was singing in alarm. Arrgh my worst fears seemed to be coming true. So I went from outlet to outlet, tested my breakers , nothing . I called the power company because it seemed even worse. They came and put a monitor to watch the system for a few days.
They came back checked their device and to my great joy discovered that the problem was with them. So no big repair job for me and a big one for them. Good news and this problem may have had a good side as I cleaned out the computer and gave it a good uninterruptable power supply .

I haven't seen Dr. WHO...but I plan to. It's nice to finally get something that you couldn't understand.
My good news:
It's been a year and a half long process, but I now have a high powered, dual monitor, computer station...up and running perfectly.
It was not easy, a few minor and major bumps along the way.
The thing I am most happy about....the money I earned from art paid for it.

On Thursday, I went to a national office supply chain to get a cd drive (my new HP Touchsmart doesn't have one) and a 32gb flash drive for transferring files. It wasn't until I came home and checked the receipt that I realized I got the flash drive for nothing. The cashier didn't ring it up.
Today (Friday) I went to the mall and parked near JC Penney's. On the way back out I thought "I should check to see if they have my purse here" because mine fell apart after only 6 months. I found it, went to the register and the $39 bag rang up at $9.99. I got a second one.
Might not be art related, but since I'm not selling much anyway, saving $82 in two days works for me!

I'm glad to hear of everyone's success! No matter how small it may seem, it is important to stay encouraged, I'll take small as well as large! I'm very encouraged, I just started Pinterest yesterday, it's been 24 hours and I have one follower. I have gotten several views in my FAA gallery on all of the prints I have pinned that are mixed on the boards with interior images.
I want to give visitors a view of what art looks like in interior spaces. My goal is to have good looking boards that are somewhat color coordinated, I've even deleted some of my own work if it didn't coordinate with nearby images to try and get people excited about art in their living spaces. Should anyone be interested here is my Pinterest location:
I don't know my web address there, my name is Suzanne Powers but I think there is another person by that name, so I'm not sure if you can choose.

One of my silly little paintings I made at a painting party (a monthly-ish get together I host) sold when I uploaded it to share on FB.
BUT
When I brought it in to work to give it to the buyer, the Designer of the show I work on saw it, loved it, and put it on set (as a child's painting - but whatever).
In July or August, millions of people are going to see my little painting! :D

Good news from Alberta... I just got my first hotel deal... 21 large pictures for their lobby and other public areas.
Some of these are on FAA including the one below, but I'm a newbie, so haven't had time to upload much of my port. The sale was my best ever, though handled privately.
Also, and just as important, I saw my first Mountain Bluebird of this spring yesterday.

My good news is that I licensed one of my squirrel photographs to Hallmark, to be used as cards and e-cards. And they now have my sites on a list for their art directors and designers to check when they're looking for new images. I'm pretty stoked about it!
Also, the day I got the email from Hallmark I also sold a canvas here at FAA.
More good news...Yesterday I went for a long hike and found an osprey nest with not one, not two, not three, not four, but five osprey flying around! They were battling it out occasionally, bringing branches to the nest, constantly calling each other and flying around a lot. It was thrilling! I got tons of shots of course.
Some bad news...When I was started to drive home I realized that my brakes weresuddenly total mush. A very scary 15 minutes later I got home. I've been looking for a new van for months but it's hard because there aren't many people where I live so the choices are slim. So I opened the paper and immediately found a van to suit my budget. So my bad news turned into good news because today I bought the van!

I have had some success with my "Doors of..." posters, but I got a call earlier that had me doing a happy dance. After trying for over a year to get someone to carry my "Doors of Lambertville" version, a gallery in Lambertville decided, on May 2, to give it a go. I gave them 5 16x20's in tubes and one framed. In less than 2 weeks, there is only 1 left and they want more! And they are selling them at a much higher price than my other venues in the other towns (I am getting my full retail, which they double for the gallery).
Of course, there's a yin to that yang-my PC crapped out and I thought I would not be able to get more printed until I got it fixed. Then fate smiled again and, due to my rare diligence and foresight, I had the poster on a Passport drive. Whew!!

I've had a pretty good week or two. First, I have a "meet and greet" this Saturday with 15 of my prints in an art gallery. I have been in contact with a railroad author who is using seven of my shots in one of his books and is looking at others for his next work. I was invited to a flour mill here in town for some Behing the Scenes work based on my exterior shots of the mill seen and liked by people who work there who also said they are going to host an art show of their bulding partly because they want to help me sell some of my work. Tonight, I am doing some portrait work for a company and yesterday I sold two big prints, one 20X30 and anotehr 24X16 here on FAA.
Almost forgot that a design company I had worked with before called and asked for more prints for a restaurant they are redoing here in Columbia. The check is in the mail.

Hey! I just noticed that I pass my three year mark with FAA a couple days ago!
When I started I didn't give it much thought. Just uploaded the minimum 25 and put my attention elsewhere, expecting the sales to just happen.
Over the past three years my skill have improved considerable, I've upgraded my equipment to professional grade, concentrated more on fine art then commercial work, promoted more, had my first show, released a couple of photo books and have seen steady sales starting this past November. Its not a sprint but a marathon!

I have been on FAA for almost three years, so it's long overdue. I went to the baseball stadium in Baltimore (Orioles Vs Tampa Bay Rays) 6-27-14 and caught my first foul ball! I had my Nikon D600 with a 70-300mm zoom lens in my right hand but I was able to catch the ball with my left hand (jumping to assure the guy next to me didn't steal it from me). I had told myself the night before that if I got a shot at getting a ball, I would use my hat to catch it. All that went out the window during the moment as my little league experience automatically took over. The ball hit the concrete in another section behind me first, and bounced high and into my section with a good deal of spin on it. I couldn't believe it finally happened (1st half of the first inning). Thanks to the Rays Right Fielder, Kevin Kiermaier for the treat.

Also this week. Got my first payout from Amazon (Create Space) for royalties on my book "the Quotable Westie" -- took about a year and half to sell enough books to reach the payout threshold.
Still haven't found a better solution for publishing an affordable print on demand photo book. Create Space is really designed more for text and Blurb is so expensive.

I have been having a great week...my family and I just returned safely (key word here!) home after a two-week vacation in Scotland and Italy. I have been editing the photos and it's like reliving the trip all over again. So many beautiful images! If I am lucky they will translate into sales, but even if they don't, the experience was priceless. : )
