F A A Code - A Step Back To May 2021. New Names Please...
I have turned the clock back to May. I spent the summer exploring the potential for recording my (thousands of) digital outcomes here. To some extent, it was a wasted summer. But, I did confirm, I don't have what it takes to sell here. So, I have reverted to using my Pixels Premium account as a gallery space for my site specific F A A CODE outcomes. Now, I am very happy with the current series of 61 images (I usually call them outcomes, if you hadn't noticed). But, I am open to adding more component outcomes. For each new component, I need a name to seed my algorithm. It would be ideal to get another batch of 16 names. So, if you want to donate your name, here are the two threads with the details and how the first batch of 16 went. There's also a list of those names already coded in the first batch. To donate your name, give permission in this new thread.
Not something I am familiar with Tibor. I could simply use any piece of text to seed my algorithm, but it has proven to be more enjoyable when other people connect with the work, by permitting me to use their names. I could just use names and not say who. The cipher in the algorithm is not easily reversed. No one would know. But I don't do that, as it reduces the enjoyment. My only agenda is to grow the series of outcomes.
For the moment, this series carry prices I do not expect anyone to pay. This relates to a spin-off concept expressed in a related outcome.
Should anyone show any real interest, individual prices may be negotiable. I sold one t-shirt, at a standard price, from the first batch. Thank you. I could, of course, have set no prices, but then the outcomes would not appear on any of the products, and these are an intentional part of the exhibition. But, let's not get into a sales discussion here. These are artistic concept decisions and nothing to do with selling. Any sales are a side-effect.
My name is Richard Maxwell Schmidt. My wife told me to post my name here to become eligible to win a "Box of untold riches". What are my odds of winning and will these "untold riches" become a tax burden for me in the future. Please advise.
Yes David, 004 is yours. There are four in all: the original coding, a square pattern made with four original 'tiles', another made with sixteen, and finally, a panoramic made with twelve original 'tiles'. Thank you for being one of the first to join in.
A brief explanation. My process uses an algorithm seeded by a sequence of letters. The algorithm places coloured bars on a square. The position size and colour are relative to the sequence of letters. Using names, with approval, adds an extra human dimension by creating a connection with the named person. Although, without knowing the name, it would be difficult to reconstruct it from the image. So, the image can be considered a one way visual cypher of the name. All of this is just my way of limiting the infinite possibilities. In the end it is the aesthetic of the outcome that is important, not how it was achieved. Here is my name.
I’m going to be busy over the weekend. I’ll add any new names [to the list] on Monday.
PS. I may keep up over the weekend. 5 minutes here and there. If not, I will catch up on Monday, when I plan to start processing the names. I need to explore the possibility of adjusting the algorithm.
PPS. On review, nine new names will make for a good PHASE 2 group. So, this coming week, I will work with the nine names. Any additional names will become part of PHASE 3.
I have 10 new names to work with, this week, and 24 in all (I have moved SD into phase 2). This is sufficient for now. Any new names will go on a waiting list for phase 3. I have no idea when or if phase 3 will occur. But, feel free to add your name and I will list it as waiting.
This week, I will fire up the algorithms and see what pops out of the creative process.
I have found a tweak to the algorithm, that I like. So, the PHASE 2 outcomes will be similar but different to the PHASE 1. At least, that's how things look today. I'll sleep on it and see where tomorrow's studio session takes me.
I have uploaded outcomes for three more names, four outcomes per name, one each in the four collections: F A A CODE 1, F A A CODE 4, F A A CODE 16, and F A A CODE PANO. All the outcomes, in these collections, start with the unique three digit username code. I'll be loading another batch of outcomes tomorrow. I have dropped the idea of phases. New names will be added to the list, as they occur, and I will process them as time allows. I also decided to continue using the original algorithm, to populate the existing collections. I may add a new collection using a tweaked algorithm. If I do, I will process all names through the new algorithm. In the meantime, enjoy...
There is a new construction incorporating the first 25 names (000 to 024) in a 5 x 5 grid.
Thank you all for seeding this process. Using real names is much more enjoyable than picking text at random. This project remains open to new names. If/when they are offered, I will list them here and then work on them in batches. Patience may be required as I have other commitments. But, I will get every name coded eventually, as time allows.
There is now fifth collection containing the outcomes from a tweaked version of the algorithm. These go beyond the flat aesthetic of the originals to add focus on the edges in the code. The plan is to produce an outcome for each name in each of the collections.
F A A CODE 1
F A A CODE 4
F A A CODE 16
F A A CODE PANO
F A A CODE 1 EDGE
Here is a side-by-side comparison between flat and edge outcomes.
I need to pause now. Other commitments beckon, for the next day or two. I'll process any new names when I return.
