I am 88 years young and still painting with a steady hand. I have been doing some sort of art work since I was 4 years. How do I know this ? Recently I received a E-Mail from a unknown young lady in Geogia. Her mother had died recently leaving behind the story of growing up in Pennsylvania. She wanted to know if I was the Tony Caviston who would sit on the porch drawing with her mother when they were 4 years old. She had seen my web site.
Do you have a nostalgic story to tell ?

OK... I have one. I'm 90 and and grew up in the South, living in Funeral Homes.
One of my younger sisters recently started retracing the places she lived in, and visited Russellville, Alabama and took a tour of the old mansions in the town.
She was in the home shown here and asked, "Did this used to be a Funeral Home?" It was, she was told. During WWII. "Well, this used to be my bedroom!"
As she was leaving the next door neighbor struck up a conversation and asked her if she had a brother named Charles. She said yes and he said,
"OMG, Charles used to invite kids over to play hide and seek and he'd get us into the casket room, turn off the lights and scare us half to death! Please tell him, I still remember that!"

That's amazing, Tony. Keep on keepin' on.
You've got 13 years on me but I've been an avid photographer for a bit over 64 years. My parents gifted me a home darkroom kit for my 11th birthday because of my interest in photography.

Tony when I was a kid, my interest was not on my art. It was on all the lovely ladies around me.
.
And today I never felt so young, with now there are 2 coots that I know of, on this site older than my 87 years.
By the way, Chuck, regarding the funeral home, when I was 7, I spent 3 early mornings, on my own, by the side of my deceased beloved Grandmother, as she was laid out in our living room....The hardest thing for me to get over, was that even though I spent all that direct time with her in her later years, when she was still alive, and then tragically after her death, I was deemed too young to go to the burial.
Edit:
Susan, I was wondering why my ears were red today

How beautiful! May I please ask which one of your works is hanging in the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Tony, if you don't mind to tell us?

And you, Roger! You worked on the design and construction of the Metropolitan Opera House? Wao!
(Edit: I hope you don't mind I mentioned it, it's true it was before you started making art, but still quite impressive!)

Beautiful stories Tony and Chuck. I really enjoyed reading them.
I will be 83 in a few days. I started drawing while very young, also. After my dad died in 1996, age 95, I was going through his file cabinet. He had saved some of my color crayon drawings that I made at age 5. I am happy to have them.
Skip forward to 2000, after I retired, I wanted to pick up my drawing art. I used colored pencils and still enjoy seeing some of the works, which I have hanging on the walls.
Then, life got busy, playing golf, traveling a lot, and shooting a lot of photographs. Many of the images are posted on FAA.
Skip forward to 2018. Once again, I decided to start doing a variety of art again. I made a lot of dot paintings, mostly using Dual Brush Pens. They are very abstract and some are microscopic in origin, such as plant and Stem cells.
Then, I fell in love with creating Collages! Some are posted on FAA.
After several years with those two media, I started watercolor painting— my favorite media. OMG! That is tough. After struggling a lot, I realized that I had to go back to the beginning, by DRAWING. I use mostly watercolor pencils. That has been a real learning experience.
Now, I feel more confident and I intend to start doing watercolor paintings again, picking up where I left off when I realized I needed to practice drawing much better.
Some success in watercolor painting would be a DREAM COME TRUE!

Lucia.....You must be referring to the painting Family Ties, it was accepted into the prestigious "Art of the State of Pa. annual competition in 2006. The painting hung at the State Museum of Pa. , across from the Capitol Building from June 10, thru Sept 16 2006
If you look closely at the painting you will see the artist, husband, wife, birthdays, date married, number of children.
Thanks for calling attention to this painting, it's one of my favorites.

@ Lucia, I was a home economics teacher. I mostly taught consumer education, independent living, and housing and interior design. I taught in Minnesota for three years before moving to Southern California. I worked for Los Angeles USD for 31 years, loving every day. I would have also have loved teaching art.
@ Tony, your watercolors are wonderful. I know you would do more spectacular work!
@ Viva, I often think of our two trips to your beautiful country. I met Kaye Menner in Sydney. Wish I had met you.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

Your story is very nice! Adorable! My grandpa was professional jeweler, he continued to create gold-n-diamond beauty in his age 93. He said that it was a great pleasure to be able to create jewelry, it is an art. I agree with that, jewelry is an art.

Dear Sofia
Thank you for your reply about your grandpa . I know his feelings. I get the greatest pleasure going into my studio and getting lost in my paintings. Have a good day!

Beautiful story, Tony.
I will be 80 in three years. I had a very late start in art. I do not paint, but I started fine art photography just six years ago. I would love to have my art life longevity over 80 years :-)
