Gary Wing was born in western Montana and as a child he enjoyed roaming the Rocky Mountains on foot or on horseback. In 1959 his family moved to Redmond, Oregon and he developed a love for the high desert and the Cascade Mountains. Graduating from Redmond High in 1964 he went on to Oregon State University and then worked as a ranch manager and wildlife biologist with the Federal government.
