Artist's Description

Blast furnace coke ovens. These beehive coke ovens (behind the shed in the foreground) are adjacent to the blast furnaces of the Hanna Furnace Company, Leetonia, Ohio, USA. Dating from 1933, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
