Description
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), British nurse, humanitarian and hospital reformer, in 1854, tending patients evacuated to the hospital at Scutari (in Istanbul, Turkey) during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Already an experienced nurse, Nightingale was appointed director of nursing operations during the Crimean War. Her efforts to improve sanitation in the military hospitals drastically reduced the mortality rate among the sick. A report in 'The Times' popularised the legendary image of her making solitary rounds at night with an oil lamp, checking on patients. This chromolithograph, titled 'The Lady with the Lamp', was published in 1891.
