One of my favorite sections of the Louvre is The Department of Egyptian Antiquities. It comprises over 50,000 pieces, includes artifacts from the Nile civilizations (which date from 4,000 BC to the 4th century). The collection is among the world's largest, and it overviews Egyptian life spanning Ancient Egypt, the Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom, Coptic art, and the Roman, Ptolemaic, and Byzantine periods.

This is a stele of Hathor and Seti. A stele is a stone slab or a wooden slab, generally taller than it is wide. These were erected in the ancient world as a monument. Grave steles were often used for funerary or commemorative purposes. They were also used as ancient Greek and Roman government notices or as boundary markers to mark borders or property lines. Their surface usually has text, ornamentation, or both. The ornamentation may be inscribed, carved in relief, or painted. This particular one is painted.

Hathor is an ancient Egyptian goddess who personified the principles of joy, feminine love, and motherhood. She was one of the most important and popular deities throughout the history of ancient Egypt. She was worshipped by royalty and common people alike. She is often depicted as "Mistress of the West", welcoming the dead into the next life. In other roles, she was a goddess of music, dance, foreign lands, and fertility. She was believed to assist women in childbirth. She was also believed to be the patron goddess of miners.

Seti was a pharaoh of the New Kingdom Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt, the son of Ramesses I and Sitre, and the father of Ramesses II.

All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
