Artist's Description

If you say the title quickly it sounds like a pastel sunset. Pastel colours have high value (more light than dark) and low to intermediate saturation (more white than colour). The colours of this family are usually described as soothing, soft, near neutral, milky, washed out, desaturated, lacking strong chromatic content. The clouds and the sky backing them certainly had these characteristics. In many places you could hardly distinguish the clouds from the sky.

It is a bit simpler if you don't think too much about the title. The painting is just about a beautiful sunset that has occurred and I wanted to paint about it even though it was past. The play on words was intentional and keeps my simple life interesting. On another note, I have painted so many sunsets that it is getting harder to find distinctive names for them.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
