This print is beautiful. It's a commonly depicted subject, but it is very special. The composition, tonal quality, and movement are exceptional and evocative. The piece is true to it's title... breathtaking!

I have wanted this for my pro life bulletin board at my Catholic Church and I wasn’t disappointed. It is beautiful and it has so much meaning put in a picture. A picture speaks better then words and this picture says it all. Thanks

Artist's Description

Illustration (by Joseph Swain) from Punch, or the London Charivari, features John Bull, the representative of the British people, asked by King Coffee for the return of his state umbrella, February 19, 1881. Entitled 'The Irrepressible Nigger!' it relates to the 1874 Ashanti Campaign led by Sir Garnet Wolseley after threats had been made to British interests on the Gold Coast. The Ashanti capital fell in February 1874, and peace was made through the signing of the Treaty of Fommarah. This laid down terms for the payment of a war indemnity. The King's state umbrella had later been presented to Queen Victoria at Windsor. (Photo by The Cartoon Collector/Print Collector/Getty Images)
