The American Redstart (Setophagia ruticilla) is a New World warbler with a long and distinctive tail, measuring about 5.25 inches in length and about 0.29 ounces in weight. Breeding males are black on their upperparts except for orange-red patches on their wings and tails. Adult females have gray heads, yellow sides and bases of secondaries, and olive-gray upperparts. American Redstarts move quickly among branches, fanning their tails, and leaping into the air in order to catch insects. Some of their prey is gleaned from branches and leaves. Preferred foods are insects, including caterpillars, moths, flies, beetles, and occacionally berries, small fruit, and seeds. American Redstarts breed in the eastern United States and in southern Canada. They are migratory, and winter in Central America and northern areas of South America. Preferred habitat includes deciduous woods, thickets, scrub, and agricultural areas, near water.
