Mt. Lemmon, part of the Catalina Mountain Range, in the Coronado National Forest, has much to delight the visitor. Sky Islands, a scenic byway (Mt. Lemmon Highway), which runs 26 miles from the Tucson Valley floor to the town of Summerhaven. There are many stops along the way, each stop inviting you to get out of the car and look around. I have acted as guide to my trip to this wondrous place, sharing my fascination with rock formations, by way of all the different Hoodoo Rock Formations photography.

While doing that I also discovered something else that fascinates me, trees! Well these weren't your "average Joe" trees. Rough bark, no, it's very smooth. Color brown, no, dark red (almost a mahagony). As the tree expands, it's paper thin layer of outer bark cracks and peels away, similar to a how a snake sheds it skin. Except with the Manzanita, the skin breaks into small flakes, revealing a greenish layer, but by fall the bark darkens to its usual red.
