Description
A scene from Greek mythology visualised by Victorian artist Sir Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painted in 1864. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is well-known, and involves highly regarded musician Orpheus travelling to the underworld to rescue his love Eurydice, who has died from a snake bite. He strikes a deal with Hades, the king of the underworld, who agrees to let Eurydice go as long as Orpheus doesn't look at her until they get back to daylight; hence, Orpheus straining not to look at her, and pushing her away. Leighton was awarded a peerage in 1896, making him Baron Leighton of Stretton, but died the following day.
