Description
Azure seas and aquamarine tidepools dance on the shores of Loophead Peninsula along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way in County Clare. This part of Ireland, picturesque on this sunny summer day, is known for its steep cliffs, rocky outcroppings and fierce winter storms. Before the era of electronic navigation, many ships have lost their way, only to end up on the rocks and dispatched to the chilly deep.
In 1588, some 24 ships of the Spanish Armada were wrecked along this coast from County Antrim to County Kerry after they were driven on the rocks by violent storms. An estimated 5,000 sailors lost their lives as the fleet was attempting to return home to Spain after an unsuccessful battle against the British at Gravelines, part of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands.
Ireland's records since 1750 show a total 90 shipwrecks in County Clare's waters and in the Shannon Estuary. Most of the recorded wrecks occurred in the early 1800s, prior to the installation of the Loophead Lighthouse in 1854.
