This painting of a tree by the river is a little more loose and wild than I normally do - and I enjoyed every minute of it! I'd like to try a larger version with a little wider view but this was a fun color study to get me going in that direction. This old tree is along the greenway by the Roanoke River here in Salem VA.

I grew up exploring the outdoors here in Southwest Virginia. My family would often go for long drives and end up hiking in the woods where my parents would identify plants and trees and point out animal tracks as they taught us to appreciate the awesomeness of God's creation. I can still remember the first time I saw a pink "Ladies Slipper" growing up out of a pile of leaves deep in a forest. Those adventures with my family still inspire my landscape paintings today but I'm also blessed with a group of friends who love to paint outdoors.
