Description
Study of a young woman playing a pea-green harpsichord by American impressionist Mary Louise Fairchild Low (1866-1946), painted in 1899. New Haven-born Fairchild studied at the St Louis Art School and in Paris at the famous Academie Julian. She enjoyed considerable critical and commercial success at the time, married celebrated American sculptor Frederick MacMonnies in 1888, divorced him in 1909 and married fellow artist and art critic Will H. Low later the same year. It is unclear whether Mary Louise continued with her career after the marriage; all reference online to paintings by her date from the pre-1909 period.
