Description
River flats along the Orara after heavy rains. This track along the river is the only means of escape when the river rises and sometimes even this becomes impassible when Middle Creek, a minor tributary nearby cuts off local residents sometimes for weeks.
Regrowth like this is the result of indiscriminate logging that preceded cattle grazing during the previous century. In the process many exotic and typical Australian hardwood species such as mahogany and Cedars were destroyed.
Hard hoof animals are the singular cause of soil erosion and degradation in the world and in Australia where cattle and sheep were introduced at the expense of coastal habitat, its consequences are stark. A new culture of conservation is achieving successful redress of these earlier practices. New residents along the river these last thirty years have replaced marginal cattle stations and today, the river has been largely rehabilitated. The population here is thin on the ground and life moves at the general slow pace of these rivers for most of the year.
